In year 4, children need to be able to recognise the decimal equivalents of 1/2, 1/4 and 3/4. These are not fractions that we can easily convert into decimals so often ones that we ‘just need to know’. However, children won’t ’just know’ them unless they understand why 1/4=0.25 and can see it visually and apply the learning themselves.
